An Unlikely Source for Poutine: Elephant & Castle?

It may be old news for Elephant & Castle regulars. But an Eater reader sent along this fun fact to the tipline: the British-themed pub has an entire poutine section on its menu.

Peruse "The Poutinerie" section on the menu and find the gravy and cheese curd-topped Canadian specialty. There are a number of other topping choices and variations as well, including gravy fries with bacon, "the works," sweet potato fries and even an Indian-leaning butter chicken poutine.

It's not necessarily a natural fit for the menu, given the British-leaning theme of the restaurant, but Elephant & Castle (which has two local locations downtown) was bought by a Canadian company in early 2012. A company spokesperson said the item was added as part of a general menu refresh that took place in 2013.

Poutine can be a tough dish to find in D.C., though Eater has spotted it on such menus as Mokomandy in Sterling (which does a Cajun version), Bearnaise and The Black Squirrel. Restaurants such as Churchkey (which has served Disco Fries) and DGS Delicatessen (with its schmutzy fries) have similar dishes — the city doesn't want for loaded fries in general.
