Velvet has emerged as the must-have texture for fall, particularly in shoes. On the runway, Dries van Noten complimented oversize trousers and sweeping skirts with jewel-toned velvet ankle boots, while Dolce & Gabbana luxed up a pair of classic Mary Janes in red velvet. Alberta Ferreti and Stella McCartney are among other notable champions of the plush material, which sometimes gets cast in a gaudy light. Consider its roots in the Renaissance gowns of the 15th century royalty, however, for a refresher on its truly luxurious roots (or think about '90s royalty Drew Barrymore in a crushed velvet blouse circa 1991, another high point for the fabric).

Brands from low to high, from ASOS to Tom Ford, have embraced the material in their shoe collections this season, and we have 15 of the best in the gallery above. Click through for shoppable picks from flats and sneakers to pumps and heeled boots.
