Rihanna Talks Candidly About Vaginas, Race, and Hard Work In New Interview

In a new New York Times profile, Rihanna spoke to filmmaker and author Miranda July about her life as the world's realest 27-year-old. In it, she revealed what she googles (childbirth and what actually happens with that whole situation down there), who she's attracted to (bilingual, intelligent men) and how her mother let a teenager fly to New York to start a music career (being emotionally paralyzed by God — probably).

She also revealed that the secret to her success — seven albums in seven years, multi-million-dollar global tours — lies in always looking forward. From the interview:

I used to feel unsafe right in the moment of an accomplishment — I felt the ground fall from under my feet because this could be the end. And even now, while everyone is celebrating, I'm on to the next thing. I don't want to get lost in this big cushion of success.'

And the thing that motivates her: seeing how her race — nearly 10 years into her career — still finds its way into the business side of the music industry.

You know, when I started to experience the difference — or even have my race be highlighted — it was mostly when I would do business deals. And, you know, that never ends, by the way. It's still a thing. And it's the thing that makes me want to prove people wrong. It almost excites me; I know what they're expecting and I can't wait to show them that I'm here to exceed those expectations.
