The New York Observer sat down with J.Crew's head stylist, Gayle Spannaus, in J.Crew's expansive color library to get a rundown of the colors we'll be wearing and/or seeing everywhere in about a month. According to the Observer, the library houses 3,633 different color swatches—patterns included—and the brand is tasked with whipping up 100 exclusive new colors each season.

For fall, Spannaus says that camel will be the most versatile color to invest in, as well as canary yellow. While not exactly as neutral as the camel, Spannaus swears that the yellow is "super versatile and complimentary to every skin tone."

The most unexpected color you'll be seeing on shelves in the fall? Cobalt. "It works off of everything and it is in everyone's wardrobe," Spannaus tells the Observer. "It is definitely the most versatile of the brights."

Spannaus says her all-time favorite hue from the 3,633 swatches in the library is blush, and her favorite patterns are stripes, gingham, plaids, and buffalo checks. "They are so timeless and play really nicely as neutrals," she says.
