Sometimes accessories are just that: add-ons. One the strongest trends we saw on the fall runways — and now in stores from Barneys to Zara — was the skinny scarf, which has nothing to do with warmth, but everything to do with upgrading your otherwise dull ensemble.

Style without utilitarian purpose is the root of any good trend, after all. The skinny scarf proved its seasonal dominence when it appeared on dozens of fall runways: Chloé outfitted nearly every model in the knotted scarves, pairing them with un-buttoned blouses and slouchy vests. Haider Ackerman used the scarves as patterned statement pieces with fitted jackets and loose trousers, while Temperly London complimented slinky dresses with sequined renditions.

It-girls Alexa Chung and Rihanna have already embraced the trend, adding silk scarves to everything from slip dresses to fur coats. Achieve the easy-as-heck look yourself with 12 of our favorite skinny scarves, shoppable in our gallery above.
