If you're a girl who likes clothes and you live in a climate with seasons that change, chances are you love fall. This is the season synonymous with layering, cozy knits, jeans, boots, and outerwear; a cocoon of wool and denim and leather to bury in to. As much fun as it is to shop for fall, it's just as exciting to pull out favorite pieces — the hero items that have made through year after year and leave you feeling almost relieved: "I'm so glad I bought that."For this week's edition of Editor's Picks, we asked all five of our recurring editors — Rajni, Nicola, Nia, Leslie, and Danielle — to share the item they can't wait to pull out of their closet, and the piece they can't wait to add to it. Unsurprisingly, everyone named a favorite coat (some new, some old), plus boots, sweaters, and seasonal bags.

RAJNI JACQUES, FASHION EDITOR-AT-LARGE

Picking Up: The Arrivals 'Moya' waterproof shearling jacket, $885

"I have a crazy motorcycle jacket collection, so whenever I see one that has something different, I must acquire it. I love that this one, from Racked Young Guns-approved line The Arrivals, is oversized with a wide-belt detail. The hardware is super-noticeable, but the best part is the ultra warm shearling lining on the inside.

Pulling Out: Puma by Rihanna 'Creeper' sneaker, $120

"I’m not going to lie: I have not had this item in my closet for long. These are Riri's first design for Puma, where she's creative director now, the perfect melange of sneaker and creeper (Sneeper? I don't know). I knew they'd be a fun addition to my closet. I'll wear them with jeans and a tee (shocker) or even a tight turtleneck sweater dress with The Arrivals moto jacket.

When I buy things, I always go in with the mindset that they will be in my closet for years to come. Even though these sneakers are a bit trendy with the thick sole, the color way keeps them classic. You’ll be seeing me in these a lot this fall."

Picking Up: Dolce Vita 'Ginnee' boot, $200

"Dolce Vita is magical. Somehow they always know what I want, stylistically, then they make it in quality materials at a not-crazy price. These '60s-inspired ankle boots are just that: durable suede with solid construction and a 2.75" block heel that I can wear all damn day and all damn night. The pointed almond toe shape is elongating (which is great, because I have mad short legs) and black ankle boots are a wardrobe constant for me.

I'm more of a skirts and dresses girl than a denim lady, and these will look great with all of my mockneck mini dresses and A-line mini skirts. If I'm feeling really midcentury, I'll wear these with my cocoon coat and a box bag; but, thanks to the tough zippers, they work just as well with my biker jackets (like the one below) and bucket bags."

Pulling Out: Rag & Bone tweed and leather motorcycle jacket

"I bought this during college at the Barney's Warehouse Sale. Despite the massive markdown, it was still really expensive and I was nervous about buying it. I had just gotten a paycheck from the first styling gig I had done on my own (it was for a band playing on an NBC late night show... I don't think they knew I was still in college) so this was my 'reward' for the hustle.

I am so glad I splurged on this thing. I can wear it from mid-September to early-November thanks to the warm tweed body of the jacket. The leather sleeves have broken down so beautifully over time and are crazy soft, fitting me like nothing else. Every year when I break this jacket out I get a ton of compliments. Plus, it forces me to dress outside of my usual shell of black and white."

madewell-sweater-dress_2015_10

Picking Up: Madewell side-slit sweater dress, $110

"I spied this casual-cool sweater dress in Madewell's fall campaign last month and it's been on my mind since. A sweater dress is only as good as it's cut, and this one nails it with a relaxed fit and rounded neckline. The end result is boyishly sexy.

The camel color of the dress will look great with a black leather jacket and all-white Adidas, a minimalist color palette I'm stealing from The Row’s fall 2015 collection."

Pulling Out: Burberry Brit hooded trench coat with warmer, $995

"This Burberry coat was a 'welcome to New York' gift from my parents. I've only had it since the beginning of this summer, and over the course of those three months I've managed to fall in love with it, walking around the house with it on in 80 degree weather (that's love).

As a Southerner prepping for her first winter up north, I’m hoping it will keep me warm when the temperatures drop below what I’m used to. I’ve always equated winter with a coat like this: a classic trench shape in an elegant, versatile color (plus a detachable hood and lining). I'm planning to wear it with cigarette pants and open-toed booties inspired by none other than Burberry Prorsum’s pre-fall 2015 collection."

jcrew-coat_2015_10

Picking Up: J.Crew wool military coat with faux-fur collar,$378

"I love the military-esque vibe of this wool J.Crew coat, which is honestly a steal. The collar is faux and removable; the cut and style are so classic that I can see myself wearing this for multiple seasons. It will look great with skinny jeans and Chelsea boots, and also with flares.

I also really like that it's navy instead of black. It's so easy to default to black when buying a basic wool coat, but I've found that navy doesn't wash me out like black does. This is going to replace the beat-up old black coat I've been leaning on for more than 10 years now."

Pulling Out: H&M stacked heel ankle boots

"I am a collector of ankle boots. I am also a collector of old T-shirts, jeans, and gray sweatshirts. My closet sounds thrilling, I know.

The heel on these is perfect for longer, belled denim, and it's stacked, so these are actually comfortable to walk in. That's a must for me; I'm a wuss when it comes to super-high heels."

topshop-suede-jacket_2015_10

Picking Up: Topshop suede biker jacket, $360

"I love the '70s trend, but I worry that investing in anything too trendy will be a longterm mistake. This suede jacket from Topshop is an ideal solution: the materials, cut, and details have a distinctly retro feel, but it's a versatile style that doesn't look like it could also be a Halloween costume. This jacket is thick enough to keep me warm, but light enough to wear through transitional (um, temperamental) New York weather.

This month, I'm wearing it with high-waisted jeans, an off-white turtleneck, a pair of crisp white sneakers and my Coach bag; as it gets colder, I plan to layer it up with other coats and wear it well into the winter."

Pulling Out: Coach bag

"I passed by the Coach store in my hometown mall two years ago and fell in love with this bag — it became mine as an anniversary gift, thanks to my sweet boyfriend, who saw me drooling over it at the store.

The archive shape is simple and timeless, and the deep cranberry-red color is perfect for fall. It's broken in beautifully with time; the supple leather is forgiving when I stuff it full, and helps the bag mold to my body as I walk, a city dweller necessity."
