The Iridescent Nail Polish You Can't Screw Up

Introducing Editor's Picks, a Friday series profiling the buys our editors are obsessed with. This week's pick comes from Nicola Fumo, Racked's shopping & style editor.

Racked has affiliate partnerships, which do not influence editorial content, though we may earn commissions for products purchased via affiliate links. We also occasionally accept products for research and reviewing purposes. See our ethics policy here.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

"I can't get enough of Caption Polish's sheer, iridescent 'Walk to the Light' ($12) hue. It's the only color — well, non-color — that an incredibly unskilled nail painter like myself truly can not screw up. Don't be fooled by the peachy hue in the bottle; the polish itself is translucent (which means mistakes are virtually invisible) with a pretty shine that reflects blue-purple in the light. I do one to three coats, depending on how much of a pearlized effect I want (which you can really pump up by using a milky ivory as a base coat, like Essie's 'Allure,' $8.50). In case you're unfamiliar with the brand, Caption is part of the new breed of polishes that acts like gels, in terms of high shine and long wear-time, but you can still use regular nail polish remover to take it off.

I love to pair this polish with opal rings, which have a similar iridescent effect. I bought two from the Brooklyn brand WWAKE to wear with a family ring that belonged to my great-great-grandmother. I love how modern the WWAKE pieces are in comparison to my family piece. Opal is extra special to me because it happens to be my birthstone (October's Very Own, baby)."

Personal style, in 140 characters or less: Punk rock Kardashian — all black, white, and bronzed, but with a BFA and a septum ring.

What I splurge on: Outerwear, because it's your costume for at least two hours a day, at least eight months per year. A cashmere-wool Mackage coat, a Rag & Bone motorcycle jacket, and a sleek Helmut Lang puffer have all cost me a pretty penny, but I've worn them innumerable times.

What I save on: Sandals, because they get beat to hell on New York City's brutal sidewalks.

Best piece of shopping advice I've gotten: I read this on Racked, before I worked here! It was Stephanie Draves of Loeffler Randall who remarked, "I usually stick with one silhouette each season. It's so much easier to throw something together when all of the shapes work together!" This has seriously changed the way I buy for the better.
