AMA 2015 Recap: All the Times the Award Show Was Basically One Giant 2000s Thowback

Last night's American Music Awards claimed to be a celebration of all the biggest bands and chart-toppers of 2015. This was a lie, however, because the show was roughly three-and-a-half hours of nostalgia for an era in which most of the audience members were still in elementary school.

Between Jennifer Lopez hosting, the mini Clueless reunion, Bieber's choice in accessories, and Fall Out Boy's glorious return to relevancy, the 2015 AMAs could have just as easily taken place in the year 2000. Below, ten moments from last night that proved time is actually a flat circle and nothing ever changes.

1. J Lo's "Waiting For Tonight" opener

Jennifer Lopez's hosting duties kicked off with a slowed-down performance of her 1999 hit, "Waiting For Tonight." Bonus: She spent the next several minutes dancing to the most popular songs of this year.

2. Like, Clueless, duh!

The AMAs tapped Alicia Silverstone and her Clueless co-star Jeremy Sisto to introduce Gwen Stefani, saying, "One of the many, many great things in the movie was this young, up-and-coming band named No Doubt and their song 'Just a Girl.'"

3. Gwen Stefani!

She may (mostly) be relevant for her personal life at the moment, but for her stage performance, Gwen Stefani changed out of her naked dress and debuted a new song, "Used to Love You."

4. Fall Out Boy won an award

Oh hey, remember Fall Out Boy? They're still a band, and though their sound hasn't changed much since 2005, it's apparently interesting enough to deserve the award for Favorite Alternative Rock Artist.

5. Diddy showed up

Though Diddy was mainly there to present the award for Collab of the Year, the highlight was this adorable interaction with his old ex-girlfriend during his Puffy days.

6. Chloe Grace Moretz was basically Lizzie McGuire

Hair clips? Check. Choker? Check. Dress that wouldn't have been out of place in a middle school dance in 2005? Check. Chloe Grace Moretz may only have been five years old with Lizzie McGuire ended its run in 2004, but the vibes were too strong to ignore.

7. Alanis Morisette and Demi Lovato performed "You Oughta Know"

Alanis Morissette's Uncle Joey breakup anthem never sounded so 2015 as it did when Demi Lovato was thrown into the mix.

8. People were freaking out about Star Wars

Just like in 1999, Star Wars was the buzziest movie at the AMAs. But nothing in history has ever been as nerdy as acapella group Pentatonix singing the Star Wars theme alongside a full orchestra.

9. Bieber wore a Nirvana t-shirt

Predictably, this enraged a fair amount of Kurt Cobain fans.

10. ... And a trucker hat

While serenading the crowd with performances of "What Do U Mean," "Where Are U Now," and "Sorry," Justin Bieber chose the signature accessory of Ashton Kutcher in 2004, the trucker hat.
