Right on the heels of hair tapestry, Byrdie discovered an equally colorful hair trend that's a bit more permanent—dyeing the hair with every shade of the rainbow, all at the same time. The rainbow/unicorn look springs from the mind of colorist Aura Friedman at the Sally Hershberger salon, who is a noted expert in pastel hair dye. "It might have started in 2005 with MIA’s rose gold or Lady Gaga’s pink pieces for the VMA’s in 2009, or Peter Som’s Spring/Summer 2011 Rosegold and in Spring/Summer 2013, or French Impressionist inspired multi colored pastels. That’s my pastel life," she told Mane Addicts.

Friedman's been inspired by her birthstone opal lately, and she created a look that tries to mimic an iridescent color using rainbow and gray tones. See Friedman at work dying opal hair for Mane Addicts here, with more examples below of metallic-y rainbow hair from her Instagram.
