How to Wear Fall's New Silhouettes

This is the season to finally shelve your fit-n-flare dresses. There are so many exciting new silhouettes to try, from exaggerated flares to structured cocoon coats, pushed forward by young, pace-setting designers like Rosie Assoulin and Jacquemus. While these new shapes may seem intimidating, they're actually pretty simple to pull off. Allow us to guide you with three tips on mastering over-the-top silhouettes, from the balancing power of a miniskirt to the party pants that will outshine your cocktail dress this holiday season.

Cocoon Coat and Miniskirt

The cocoon coat was a breakout star of the fall 2015 runways, seen at Balenciaga, Acne, and more. Because this coat style is so boxy, it's best to pair with something streamlined underneath, like a miniskirt. Try an A-line shape, which won't take too much attention away from the standout coat, and will balance out the top-heavy silhouette nicely. Don't be afraid to experiment with color here, but steer clear of busy patterns.

The New Suiting

Workwear's gotten a much-needed update, pairing exaggerated silhouettes with classic suiting fabrics. Chloé's fall 2015 collection riffed on this theme, marrying wide-leg pants with oversize jackets for head-to-toe houndstooth looks. To ensure a clean and elegant outcome, stick with one fabric pattern, whether it be tweed or pinstripes. White sneakers and a pair of sleek sunglasses tie it all together.

Party Pants

Try a pair of dramatically flared pants this holiday party season in lieu of an expected cocktail dress. Look to Rosie Assoulin for inspiration; she's been showing a form of ruffled trouser since debuting her line in 2014. For fall, the designer paired the style with peplum tops (not unlike the image above). Avoid looking like a bad interpretation of a ‘70s disco queen by paying close attention to the cut: The pants should fit slim through the thigh and knee, and flare mid-shin. Offset all this boldness with layers of dainty necklaces and a small box bag.
