Maxim's editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear is out at the magazine after a little more than a year. A Maxim rep confirmed to Racked that Lanphear has stepped down from her position as editor-in-chief.

Lanphear, whose deep fashion background includes positions at T and Elle, was a surprising choice for EIC. She started in September 2014 and was in the midst of reinventing Maxim from its lad mag roots to a more sophisticated magazine with more fashion, travel, and art coverage. Since her first issue in March of this year, she put Taylor Swift at number one on the magazine's reimagined Hot List and put a solo man on the cover for the first time in Maxim history.

Last week, WWD reported that Maxim's sales were dwindling and the magazine was getting a redesign with a new team from Man of the World. A source at Maxim told Racked this relaunch is tied to major layoffs on the print side, with at least nine print staffers let go.

"We appreciate all the hard work Kate has put into the magazine and how far it has evolved during her time here," chief operating officer at Maxim Robert Price said in a press release. "This fall, we are taking the next step in our evolution and will continue to upgrade the brand across fashion and luxury."
