Taraji on Viola's Emmy Win: 'The World Needed to Hear What She Had to Say'

Just one day after the Emmys, Taraji P. Henson paid a visit to Ellen to discuss Viola Davis's history-making win for her role on How to Get Away With Murder. Taraji, who was also nominated for the "Lead Actress in Drama" category for playing Cookie on Empire, was absolutely ecstatic about the long overdue win for her peer.

She recounted her immediate shock when finding out that no black woman has ever won in that category before, and set her sight on seeing that award in the hands of either herself or Viola. She told Ellen DeGeneres:

When I went into it and knew I was being nominated alongside Viola I thought to myself, "God just please give it to one of us so we never have to say that again." Let's just break that barrier down and keep on pushing, you know! And I think the universe is happy. Viola deserved that award and, honestly, I would have felt it weird if I had gotten it over her, you know what I mean? You just gotta give respect and know when your time is.
