When it comes to denim styling ideas, there's nothing like looking back to look forward. Vintage photos offer a wealth of inspiration, from grainy photographs of Gold Rush miners in the 1880s to Hollywood's obsession with Wild West looks in the 1950s.

Style-wise, things start to get really good in the 1970s. Jeans could be as casual as Lauren Hutton in a denim skirt and a white tee, or as foxed up as Brigette Bardot in a dark, waist-cinching pair of jeans with a navy blouse. Our denim through the decades inspiration gallery begins with that golden era, weaving through time to today. Click through for dozens of killer denim outfit ideas including Brooke Shields doing mom jeans on the red carpet in 1990, Beyoncé serving super-low-rise in 2001, and so much more.
