What the Team Behind Self Magazine Wears to Work

See how the staffer's behind Condé Nast's glossy fitness get dressed for work.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

While we're currently in the middle of a major fitness boom, Self has been on the exercise beat since 1979. The magazine covers health, wellness, beauty and—of course—fitness, but don't assume staffers show up to work in Lululemon leggings—the legacy title is in Condé Nast's stable of glossies, after all. Below, see what six employees wear to the office, and learn about their favorite workouts, healthy lunches, and post-gym beauty must-haves.

barbara-self-1

Barbara Reyes, Creative Director, is wearing a Stella McCartney top, a Margiela skirt, Saint Laurent shoes, and nail art from Paintbox.

What's your typical office style?
I tend to wear a lot of black, so detailing, cut, and texture are important attributes in my clothing choices. It's a challenge to make black look different every day.

What's the most creative way you've worn activewear to the office?
I wore an Alexander Wang sports bra over a tank top with culottes and heels. It was a bit unconventional and warranted some double takes, but I enjoy wearing clothing in unexpected ways.

What celebrity is your fitness motivation muse and why?
I am a fan of the Walking Dead because the female leads are so strong. When we shot Danai Gurira for Self, I was so excited to meet this sword-hurling zombie killer with amazing arms and abs. Not only was she super nice, she was determined to get the shot even if it meant non-stop kickboxing moves.

What's your favorite workout?
I enjoy workouts that engage the entire body. This includes circuits on the Nike training app, or the FIT class of Drill Fitness. I'm obsessed with Brooklyn Body Burn because it targets body parts you rarely think to work out. And rowing, boxing, and tennis are great cardio.

What are your beauty must-haves?
My beauty game changer is a well-defined brow. I use Sania's Angled Brow Pencil. Also, I own a lot of Nars products because of the high quality and nice packaging.

What are your favorite healthy recipes?
I love to cook, and sometimes you need to be resourceful. My go-to recipe is kale (or whatever veggie is in my fridge) sautéed with garlic and olive oil, mixed with brown rice and a soft boiled egg on top. Plus Sriracha. Delicious!

Lindsey-Frugier-Self-Magazine

Lindsey Frugier, Senior Fashion Editor, is wearing an Altuzarra top, AG Alexa Chung jeans, Céline pumps, and Sorelle earrings.

What's your favorite workout?
My favorite workout in the city is the Core Fusion Cardio + Barre class at Exhale. It's a non-stop sweat-inducing class that makes me feel stronger when I walk out the door. I also enjoy running outside for the challenge, sense of freedom, sunshine, and much needed fresh air.

What are your beauty must-haves?
I can't live without L'Oréal eye makeup remover, Elta MD UV Clear Sunscreen, Chanel Le Lift Eye Creme and Correcteur Perfection concealer, Benefit's Benetint rose lip stain, and Frédéric Malle L'Eau d'Hiver perfume.

What are your favorite healthy recipes?
Summer inspires me to eat healthier and seek out any and all watermelon or mango salads, fresh fish, and spicy gazpachos.

What's your typical office style?
Comfort and simplicity is key for me, and you can typically find me in tailored jeans, a button down shirt or oversized knit, and my Céline ballerina flats.

Who's your style icon, and why?
I'm inspired by the many wonderful ways that Jane Birkin could wear jeans; Stella McCartney's influence on a modern woman's wardrobe; and the classic American elegance and ease of Lauren Hutton, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and Katharine Hepburn.

What's the most creative way you've worn activewear to the office?
I'm currently into my navy suede Adidas Gazelles and could wear them everyday if I didn't stop myself. I also love an oversized sweatshirt, jeans, and heels.

Alexandra-Engler-Self-Magazine

Alexandra Engler, Assistant to the Editor in Chief, is wearing a Wilfred Free shirt, a Banana Republic skirt, a thrift store jacket, Mia shoes, a Bvlgari bag, a vintage watch and necklace, and Valentino sunglasses.

What celebrity is your fitness motivation muse, and why?
Joan Smalls. (Our very first Best Bodies cover star!) She's my everything muse.

What's your favorite workout?
Of all time, probably a barre or ballet-inspired class. But my most recent obsession is boxing.

What's the most creative way you've worn active wear/sport attire to the office?
I have a patterned green pair of Athleta jogger pants that I'll wear with strappy black heels and a white button down. It's one of my favorite office looks, actually.

What are your beauty must-haves?
Lipstick. My current go-to is Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Vera by Chanel.

What's your typical office style?
It varies—and I'm still forming my "office style"—but I wear a lot of black skinnies, leather jackets or tops, and I'm almost always in a heel. I do love the occasional surprise print, though.

What are your favorite healthy recipes? Or easy, healthy lunch ideas?
I love any dish that's ultra-colorful, so I always make salads with lots of peppers, corn, tomatoes, onions, avocados, and bright greens.

Who's your style icon, and why?
Erika Bearman, aka @OscarPRGirl. I love everything about her look: The glamour! The dresses! The furs! The crop tops!

Rebecca-Sinn-Self-Magazine-3

Rebecca Sinn, Entertainment Director, is wearing an Iris & Ink dress, Dolce & Gabana shoes, and an Hermès bracelet.

What celebrity is your fitness motivation muse, and why?
Jennifer Lopez, for sure. She just keeps getting better, year after year. When we did our cover shoot with her, I said, "I have calf envy" then "I have arm envy" and as the day went on I was naming every body part—she looks amazing!

What's your typical office style?
Preppy for sure —everyone would agree with that. I err on the simple side, not too trendy, and firmly believe a scarf can make any outfit.

What's your favorite workout?
This could vary each week, but today, my favorite workout is SoulCycle. I like going in the dark studio, getting on the bike, and knowing exactly what I'm going to get out of a class each time. I walk out feeling refreshed, and feel I've left my worries in that room (for the meantime!).

What's the most creative way you've worn active wear/sport attire to the office?
I'm a big fan of Adidas Stan Smith's since I started at Self, and I've pretty much conjured up a way to wear them with every item of clothing in my closet. I never thought sneakers could look so good with skirts!

What are your beauty must-haves?
My beauty must have is Sonia Kashuk Radiant Boost Restorative Oil. I also love Orico London Streetwise Oxygenating Day Cream, Luma liquid foundation, and Dior mascara.

Rebecca Sinn-self-magazine

Who's your style icon, and why?
So many! Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, Ali McGraw in Love Story, and Gwyneth Paltrow, Diane Kruger and Kate Beckinsale—all day, every day.

What are your favorite healthy recipes?
I'm a huge fan of roasted kabocha squash—simply done with a little coconut oil, salt, and pepper. I also love treating spaghetti squash like pasta and serving it with some grilled shrimp and tossed with some olive oil.

Katheryn-Erickson-Self-Magazine-1

Katheryn Erickson, Associate Beauty Editor, is wearing Acne jeans, a J.Crew shirt, Vince shoes, an Alexis Bittar necklace, Hermès and Coordinates bracelets, and rings from Catbird, Jennifer Meyer, and her grandma.

What's your favorite workout?
I've recently fallen in love with dance cardio classes like AKT InMotion and KP Dance Body. They make me sweat and smile—I'm much more likely to make it to a workout if it's fun! I've also been doing yoga for over ten years. I like Yoga Vida and Yoga Shanti and have my go-to instructors. I'll follow them anywhere!

What are your beauty must-haves?
I'm all about skincare. For my face, I alternate between Biologique Recherche Lotion P50V toner (it'll seriously change your skin) and Dr. Gross Alpha Beta Peel Original Formula to exfoliate and keep my skin clear. For serums, I love Skinceuticals Antioxidants. I use the Phloretin CF gel during the day and the Resveratrol BE at night—it has an amazing texture.

I'm fancy with my creams. My favorites: La Prairie White Caviar Illuminating Cream and La Mer's Soft Cream (it's a lighter, more absorbent version of the original). Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream is a fantastic daytime moisturizer, and works as the best makeup base. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is another product I love—essences are huge right now. You're going to start seeing a lot of them. Clinique has a nice one too—my skin soaks it right up!

Katheryn-Erickson-Self-Magazine-2

What are your favorite healthy recipes? Or easy, healthy lunch ideas?
A big salad is my favorite dinner. I get creative with whatever I have at home—arugula, yellow bell peppers, shaved almonds, dried fruit. My favorite trick is to fry sliced heirloom baby tomatoes in a touch of butter and add them to the top on shaved parmesan.

Emily-Rosser-Self-Magazine-1

Emily Rosser, Photo Editor, is wearing Céline trousers and loafers, a Calvin Klein T-shirt, and a Zara jacket.

What celebrity is your fitness motivation muse and why?
Karlie Kloss. Her self motivation and discipline is inspiring. She's constantly challenging herself to reach fitness goals.

What's your favorite workout?
Hot Yoga! My favorite place to go in NYC is Modo Yoga. I always feel recharged and renewed afterwards.

What are your beauty must-haves?
I love any kind of facial oil, specifically Drunk Elephant. I wear very little makeup, so I try and take extra good care of my skin.

What's your typical office style?
I like to have a uniform: Céline trousers or vintage Levi's with a simple tee, blazer, or button up.

Who's your style icon, and why?
I've always had a love for icons of the 60s and 70s—the laid back, effortless style of Lauren Hutton and Jane Birkin, or the more tomboy style of Diane Keaton. For the office, I tend to dress things up more—the Olson twins do an amazing job mixing classic vintage and current pieces.

What are your favorite healthy recipes?
Anything with avocado! And I love a good Kale salad with pine nuts, currants, and parmesan.
