Five Things You Need to Know About Lanvin's New Creative Director

Earlier today, the higher-ups at Lanvin announced that a new creative director for the storied French fashion house has been chosen. Bouchra Jarrar, the 45-year-old designer with her own namesake couture collection will be taking over the womenswear side of the brand as early as June. Her appointment comes after a poorly received ready-to-wear collection by Lanvin just last week and the controversial ousting of former creative director, Alber Elbaz, back in October.

Before Jarrar blows us away with her first collection, here are five facts to help you get to know the new face behind Paris's oldest couture house.

#1: Fourth Female Designer at Lanvin

She's only the fourth woman to have the position as creative director of Lanvin, despite the house being founded by one (Jeanne Lanvin) back in 1889. One of her closest predecessors in the job was Cristina Ortiz who took over from 1998 to 2002.

#2: She's of Moroccan Descent

Jarrar was raised in Cannes, France to Morrocan parents in 1970. She revealed to Business of Fashion in 2013 that she first fell in love with fashion as a teen after seeing an Yves Saint Laurent collection on T.V.

#3: Stellar Résumé

Some of Jarrar's past jobs included jewelry designer at Jean Paul Gaultier, a studio director for Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga, and the head of couture at Chrisitan Lacroix. She has her own namesake brand that she opened in 2010, and she showed her first solo couture collection in 2013.

#4: Known for Her Tailored Designs

Jarrar is known for her tailored designs and impeccable cuts. Her last collection for spring 2016 couture focused primarily on well-cut tuxedo trousers and fur-trimmed coats. She rarely dabbles in evening wear — something Lanvin is revered for — but she gave it a shot in this collection with a luminous two-piece silk slip dress. We're sure she's got this one in the bag.

#5: Commitment

She's pretty excited about her new digs, so much so, that she announced hours ago that she would be closing her own brand to devote her time to Lanvin. According to the New York Times, Jarrar's first collection will be Resort 2016 in June.
