How to Shop 8 Buzzy Celebrity Stylist-Founded Haircare Lines

Discovering new haircare products can be tricky. Traditionally, there are drugstore brands like Pantene and Garnier, or expensive salon brands like Oribe and Frederic Fekkai. Pick your category and roll the dice. But as celebrity hair stylists have picked up fame, they're increasingly launching indie brands featuring real innovation.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Having had their hands on the heads of the world's most famous faces, these stylists know a thing or two about what does and doesn't work, what makes styling easier and more efficient, and what's actually healthy for your hair. They saw what was missing, and they stepped up to fill the gap.

While you might not recognize their names, you’ll definitely recognize their clients. (Two of them tend to Beyoncé.) Here, the best products to shop from eight new and pre-existing celeb hair stylist lines:

R & Co

Photo: R & Co

If there was a Beatles of haircare, this trio would be it. R + Co, which launched in 2014, calls itself a "collective," and it’s an apt descriptor. Three hairdressers – Garren (an industry vet best known for giving Karlie Kloss her lob), Howard McLaren (a former magazine stylist who was a long-time creative director at Bumble and Bumble), and Thom Priano (a men’s hair specialist who has styled the likes of Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson) – collaborated on products they thought were missing or could be improved upon. The snazzy packaging imagery on very simple bottles doesn’t hurt its appeal, either.

Best products: The brand’s dry shampoo products are standouts. Try the Death Valley Dry Shampoo or Badlands Dry Shampoo paste, a combo dry shampoo and styler. The Jackpot Styling Creme is also a workhorse for a wide range of hair types.

Where to buy: R + Co site, Bluemercury, Birchbox

Price range: Shampoos/conditioners range from $24 to $29. Stylers range from $20 to $29.

Ouai

If you pay the slightest bit of attention to the Kardashians, you know who Jen Atkin is. This year, the family's hair stylist went from Kardasha-guru to full-on celeb in her own right. She runs her own editorial site, Mane Addicts, and launched Ouai (pronounced "way") in March of this year. The line is pretty spectacular, from the scents to the packaging, to yes, the efficacy of the products.

Best products: The wave spray, a golden colored, non-crunchy wave spray made with rice protein, is by far the brand’s most buzzed about product. The hair oil is a great anti-frizz and smoothing product.

Where to buy: Ouai’s site, Sephora

Price range: Shampoos/conditioners range from $26 go $28. Stylers range from $24 for a finishing creme and dry shampoo to $32 for a six pack of treatment mask packets.

Kimble Beauty

Kim Kimble is Beyoncé’s longtime stylist, behind many of the hair looks in "Lemonade." She’s also worked with Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Zendaya, and even, yes, Miss Piggy.

Best products: There isn’t one best product per se, because this small, edited line (called Bounce Back Curl) features products for specific curly and wavy hair types. There is a shampoo and conditioner, as well as a curl revitalizing cream for "boosting individual ringlets," a liquid curl enhancing spray for fine- to medium-textured hair, and a curl cream for thick, coarse, and dense hair.

Where to buy: Sally Beauty

Price range: $12.99 to $15.99

Iles Formula

Wendy Iles has been working in Paris for years as one of the go-to hair stylists for celebrity beauty campaigns and magazine covers. She noticed that her clients usually had absolutely wrecked hair from over-styling. This range, which launched this year, was four years in the making.

Best products: There are only three products – shampoo, conditioner, and finishing serum – which the brand promotes as a three-step system. If you’re getting sticker shock, go for the serum. It’s lightweight, nourishing, and suitable for all hair types.

Where to buy: Iles Formula site, Sephora

Price range: The range goes from $33 to $44. You can buy a trial sampler of all three products for $24.

Rita Hazan Collection

Rita Hazan has colored some of the biggest pop stars in the world, like Beyoncé, Katy Perry, and J. Lo. Her range of products for color-treated hair is one of the most comprehensive out there.

Best products: The root touch up spray (for covering grays for a day) and gloss (a step you do after shampooing and before conditioning to brighten your color) each come in five colors and are fantastic.

Where to buy: Rita Hazan’s site, Sephora, Ulta, Beauty.com

Price range: From $26 for shampoo, conditioner and gloss to $42 for a two-step weekly masking kit.

Hairstory

Michael Gordon founded Bumble and Bumble in 1977 as a salon and he grew the hair product business. He worked until he sold the company to Estee Lauder in 2006. (And yes, he invented the now iconic Surf Spray.) He now runs the quirky and difficult-to-describe Hairstory in NYC, a salon-cum-studio known for quirky cuts and unusual color. He launched the Purely Perfect line, which featured a cleansing conditioner, a few years ago, but recently reformulated and re-launched the brand as Hairstory.

Best products: It’s a small styling range featuring two lotions for volume and dryness respectively, as well as a texture spray (he throws a little shade here on the original Surf Spray), and the cleansing conditioner. Go for the latter if you’re averse to regular shampoos and their stripping sulfates.

Where to buy: Hairstory site

Price range: $36 for two stylers, $38 for texture spray, and $40 for New Wash

David Mallett

David Mallett is an Australian-born hairdresser who’s been working in Paris for years, counting Naomi Campbell, Marion Cotillard, and Natalie Portman as clients. He’s known for creating a distinctly French yet "bouncy" (he uses this word in his bio) hair look.

Best products: They’re all lovely and smell like subtle, chic perfume, but the new volume powder is a standout for general zhushing, and it also provides a bit of texture.

Where to buy: David Mallett site, Net-a-Porter, The Line

Price range: Beware, this line is not for the financial faint of heart. Prices range from $48 for the new volume powder to $90 for a hair mask.

IGK

Chase Kusero is behind Jared Leto’s man bun (RIP), and he and his three salon partners – Frank and Leo Izquierdo and Aaron Grenia – are also a favorite of cool girls on both coasts who go to get DGAF waves at IGK salons in LA, Miami, and New York. This week the partners launched a first-ever product line which features 21 products. They're divided into three different scents to represent each city.

Best products: IGK stylists are known for creating interesting texture, so start with the Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel (which already has a 5-star rating on Sephora.com) and the Down & Out Dirty Spray. The line also offers a temporary spray-on ombre color product.

Where to buy: Sephora

Price range: From $25 to $29

This post has been updated to include the founding members of IGK.
