Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

After a bumpy few years, the Asbury Park boardwalk is filling its iconic pavilion spaces with locally owned and operated boutiques, attracting beachgoers from all walks of life to its sand and surf. Forget the Jersey shore stereotypes — there's no "Gym, Tan, Laundry" going on here. The struggle this city has endured (it's been walloped by storm after storm) has made it a hotbed for creatives and entrepreneurs seeking inspiration near the waves.

The Market at Asbury Park Convention Hall

The sister collective to the Storehouse, this selection of shops curated into one perfect boutique includes items as varied as sea salt spray from Brooklyn Beach, hand-dyed handkerchiefs from Salt & Still, and a small selection of vintage looking accessories from nearby Foolish Ginger, right in the middle of iconic Convention Hall.

Sweet Joey's at Convention Hall

This smaller outpost of local reseller Sweet Joey's has a collection of worn vintage band tees that look as good over your bikini as they do tucked into jeans. Don't leave, though, without visiting the basket of retro bandanas in the back of the store — a hair lifesaver for windy days on the sand, or a great add-on to any outfit post-beach.

Kanibal & Co

Sure, this shop is technically an outpost of a Jersey City brand, but it's come prepared with Asbury pride and plenty of Tillie pins to sell at its kiosk in Convention Hall. And while the rest of the pin collection is just as interesting (and so much fun to shop), the celestial-inspired jewelry is the real star here.

Bettie's Bombshells

This is the shop for pinup lovers, featuring an entire wall of high waisted bikinis in fruit prints, colorful slingback heels, bright hair scarves, and heart-shaped sunnies. The best find in this pocket sized space, however, is their counter of Besame cosmetics, a line of recreations of original 1940's and 50's lip colors.

The Storehouse

This collective, presented by Amanda DiRobella of The Market in Convention Hall, features clothes from boutique brands like Nomad and Glide, as well as home goods and accessories from Interwoven, Amelia and Occasionette. Though all the pieces come from different shops, they've been curated to sit together perfectly in this new, dangerously tempting boardwalk shop.

Big Spoon Little Spoon

This is the place to grab beauty needs before you disrobe, and everything at the shop is all natural. The bug repellent is made with essential oils and catnip, and the deodorant bars are made from local New Jersey beeswax and shea butter. Shampoo bars, hemp butter lip gloss and Argon hair oil serum round out the collection of natural body care products you'll need after sand and surf do a number on you.

Lightly Salted Surf Shop

This little boutique, nestled in the back of a popular bar, is a true hidden gem. At first glance it appears to be a gift shop for sunscreen and inexpensive shades, but behind the rows of surfboards and racks of wetsuits you'll find a small selection of gorgeous flowing caftans and coverups you'll want to wear on and off the boardwalk. Don't leave without checking out the simple but cool shark's tooth jewelry by the register.

This Philly-based outdoor wear brand has set up shop on the beach for the summer and included a set of Asbury Park–themed wear and accessories. In addition to cotton t-shirts and flannels, the store carries water-resistant canvas bags that go from camping trip to summer on the boardwalk, pastel sunnies, flip flops, canteens, mugs, and anything else you need for a warm weather adventure. The best part? The brand regularly organizes trash cleanups at lakes, oceans, and other waterways near its stores.

By far the most on-trend shop in Asbury, head here for rattan beach bags that move from day to night, and to stock your closet with halter tops, striped tees, and oversized sunnies. But while everything on the racks is extremely of-the-moment, it's compiled by shop owner Bianca Freda in a way that feels timeless and comfortable.

Foolish Ginger

An honest to goodness variety shoppe, you can find colorful bandanas, vintage-inspired bathing suits, and plenty of swing dresses with cherry prints. You'll also find a cornucopia of gifts, like tiny wind-up music boxes, kite kits, knee-high socks and engraved shot glasses. For a quick fix, you can find a selection of the shop's products in Convention Hall.
This charming sunglass shop includes collections made from interesting materials, including a series of wood framed sunglasses like the Kennedy, a rosewood pair with colorful lenses; a series made from recycled skateboards; and a few round, retro pairs of bamboo frames, all inspired by Asbury Park.

Whether you shop at the retail location or the popup inside the Convention Hall, this is the place to get your Asbury Park souvenirs. The tees feature bold designs of iconic Asbury structures, and you can't turn around in this store without seeing Tillie, the official mascot of the beach, on everything from pillows to hoodies to prints.

Red Moon Life & Home

A modern day apothecary, Red Moon serves up sweet smelling, small batch concoctions like coconut body butter, oils, and serums. But don't ignore the shop's jewelry selection, which includes necklaces made with delicate beading and gems by local artists.
