BERKELEY—Here's a shocking statistic: so far this year, the soda industry has funneled more than $800K into fighting forthcoming ballot Measure D, which would impose a tax on sugary drinks sold in Berkeley. A recent $500K cash drop was apparently the single largest contribution to a campaign in Berkeley history; with a population of around 115,000 people, current expenditures are running to $7 per Berkeley resident.
