1st place: Transbay Tower
The city's soon-to-be tallest building has been tweaked over the past few years, but 2012 saw the biggest alterations to the Transbay Tower—like the unmistakable nip-tuck to the crown of the tower. With Curbed readers leaving such gems as "the world's largest camel toe" and "Personally, I'm against skyscraper circumcision," it was one of the most commented-on designs of the year.
Runner-up: 1601 Larkin
The epic battle over 1601 Larkin will likely continue long into 2013. The Stanley Saitowitz-turned-Ian Birchall & Associates-turned-Ian Birchall & Associates v2.0 design has certainly seen a dramatic transformation, as everyone and their mother has voiced an opinion on the condo project proposed to replace the existing crumbling church. The project is currently tied up in lawsuits over the Planning Commission's 2010 decision not to certify a final environmental impact report and denial of a conditional use authorization for the project, but was brought before the commission in December to get their unofficial opinion on the newest redesign. Commissioners liked that they moved away from the glass block motif, but still want them to work more with the community so everyone is happy.
