Shaw Alley Near 535 Mission Approved as Pedestrian Plaza

Shaw Alley is a narrow one-way thoroughfare that connects Mission Street to Minna Street halfway between First and Second streets. As part of the construction of 535 Mission, developer Boston Properties will pay to redevelop the alley as a pedestrian thoroughfare that will be closed to traffic. The mayor just signed off the plan, which will permanently ban cars in the alley within the next 30 days. The new pedestrian plaza will run adjacent to the building's two-story main entry and, according to Mayor Ed Lee, be instrumental in connecting the Transbay Terminal to Market Street. Construction on the alley will take place this summer and will involve tearing out asphalt and adding LED lighting. A public art piece at the corner of Minna and Shaw Alley will be called "The Band" and be designed as an abstract jazz ensemble sculpted in metal. Meanwhile, 535 Mission is well on its way to becoming a gleaming office tower. Real estate information company Trulia has already inked a deal for a six-floor lease and beginning work on the design of their space with hopes to move in by the end of 2014. More tenants are expected to sign on soon.
