Smash Hit

Smashburger, the Denver-based chain that recently opened its first SF location in the Potrero Center, has set its sights on the East Bay. Franchisees Emon and Ladonna Toliver, who also own four Wingstops in the area, want to build nine locations of the burger joint in Oakland and surrounding areas, beginning with an outlet in Emeryville at 40th and San Pablo. With Umami Burger also now competing in the Oakland market, Super Duper gaining traction outside the city, and homegrown mini-chains like Trueburger, hopefully they'll avoid a patty meltdown.
