Oakland's Montclair Bistro Closing, Chowhaus Moving In

Longtime Oakland Hills eatery Montclair Bistro is closing up shop at the end of the month, as chef-owner Henry Vortriede has chosen not to renew the space's lease, which he held for 10 years. The charming mid-century French Provencal building won't be empty for long, however: Inside Scoop reports that Vortriede has sold the restaurant to Montclair locals Joe Schnell and Tracey Belock.

Belock was most recently seen over at Tribune Tavern, but has spent time at the now-shuttered Disco Volante as well as at Quince and Farallon. The new restaurant, called Chowhaus, will be a farm-to-fork concept serving new American cuisine from breakfast through dinner, according to Vortriede.

Belock and Schnell will take over the space in early September, and will close for a remodel, though they won't be using the adjacent banquet room, which is set to become retail space. We'll keep you posted with menu details and more as things progress.

In the meantime, there's still time to stop by Montclair Bistro and say your goodbyes to Vortriede and company, who will be going strong to the end of the month, hosting a final wine dinner with Rombauer Vineyards on August 25th.
