Captain & Corset, An Uptown Oakland Wine Bistro

Status: Softly open

The space at 2212 Broadway in Uptown has once again seen a shift, as it transitioned from 2212 Wine Bar to new concept Captain & Corset last week. The space, which is next to Daniel Patterson's newly incarnated Ume, has had a tough time of it, with its second wine-bar concept (The Punchdown preceded 2212) lasting only four months. Now, the group effort behind Captain & Corset hopes to shake things up with a "New American" bistro menu, intimate ambiance, and casual, fun vibe.

Behind the new spot are 2212's owners Paul Fitzpatrick and Sam Patel (of Ike's), with Kiri Eschelle (former owner of Levende and Levende East) and GM Carlos Nieto pitching in. Picán executive chef Sophina Uong is behind the menu, which has a local and sustainable bent, with starters like Coca-Cola pork conserva,
coffee braised lamb tacos, and fennel salt crusted tuna. Entrees include crispy pork shoulder, pan-roasted sea scallops and broiled chicken paillard. (Here's the full menu.)

While Captain & Corset awaits a full liquor license, they've got plenty of wine available (here's the list), plus a selection of craft beers and some low-proof cocktails like the La Antigua (Carpano Antica, Jack Rudy tonic, fresh cherries, lime) and Port Mes (white port, Punt e Mes, club soda, orange bitters). Beer and cocktail menus are here.

A grand opening is planned for Friday, June 6th, but they're softly open now, with current hours Monday-Wednesday, 4:30pm-11pm, and Thursday-Saturday, 4:30-midnight. They also plan to roll out lunch service sometime down the line.
