San Francisco's 2016 Michelin Bib Gourmands Have Arrived

Michelin stars are set to shoot across San Francisco next week, which means today is all about the Bib Gourmands, that longer list of "quality restaurants that have menu items that offer two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (tax and gratuity not included)." Seventy-four restaurants made the cut this go round, four fewer than last year. Let's take a look at who's in the club.

• 12 restaurants made their debut: Diavola, Farmhouse Kitchen Thai, Farmstead, Izakaya Rintaro, La Perla, Millennium, Orchard City Kitchen, Poggio, Ramen Gaijin, Trestle, Wonderful and Zola. The batch is mainly places that have opened in the last year(ish), except for Diavola and Poggio, which both made the cut after years in the trenches. Meanwhile, Millennium's big move across the Bay proved fruitful, as it earned it a spot on the list for the first time.
• 16 spots fell off: Bellanico, C Casa, Domo, Donato Enoteca, Fey, Flour + Water, Gajalee, The Girl & The Fig, Hotbox Grill, Iyasare, Kin Khao, LaSalette, Perbacco, Ramen Shop, Troya and Willi’s Wine Bar. Iyasare and Kin Khao only got to sit at the Bibs table for one year before being sent back to the library, while Hotbox Grill in Sonoma closed. Beyond obvious reasons like closures, Michelin does not offer up any rhyme or reason why places fall off, so it's up to the stars to divine.
• Two mainstays still remain on: Bar Tartine and Rich Table have held court on the list for a few years running, and their inclusion this year means no stars yet again. As two of San Francisco's most ambitious and celebrated restaurants (with tasting menus on tap, too), some will surely be disappointed by that news. Perhaps Michelin is waiting to see how Bar Tartine's transition into Crescent will play out.

Remember, restaurants on the Bib Gourmand list are not eligible for stars, so sometimes they're dropped off to be awarded one (or more rarely, two or three). To be determined if that's the case for city favorites like Flour + Water, Perbacco or Kin Khao, but you can safely bet they're about to start wishing upon a star. Michelin has been on Thai kick lately, elevating Pok Pok and Somtum Der in New York from the Bibs to the starred ranks, so the smart money is on Kin Khao for an upgrade.
