UPDATED: Temescal's Genova Delicatessen Could Close After Proposed Rent Hike

The East Bay is not exempt from San Francisco's creeping rent crisis, as evidenced by the potential rent hike that is threatening to close Temescal's Genova Delicatessen. The Italian deli has been doing business in the area since 1926 (and in this location since 1996), and has an additional retail location in Napa and manufacturing facility in Oakland.

Now they might be forced to give up their anchor tenant position in the small shopping plaza that is also home to Walgreens, Peet's coffee, a salon and pilates studio. EBX broke the news that the deli's landlords are considering a rent increase that would go into effect in June, when Genova's lease runs out. General manager Julio De La Cruz said that the owners are currently negotiating the rent, but an increase and resulting closure could mean the loss of around twenty jobs. Additionally, closing the Oakland location could negatively impact the Napa location, which relies on the Oakland shop for support; the manufacturing facility would remain unchanged.

The deli has been a mainstay in the neighborhood for over 90 years, offering Italian-style deli sandwiches, frozen raviolis, lasagnas and pastas, and a variety of other delicacies to go.

Temescal Plaza appreciates the interest and concerns from the community in support of keeping Genova's Oakland store open. Genova is an important part of the shopping center and the Temescal community, and our goal is for Genova to remain at Temescal Plaza.
