Mad Oak Brings A Massive New Patio and Deck to Downtown Oakland

Late, much-lamented downtown Oakland nightclub Oasis has sat vacant since 2012, but it's finally been revived in the form of Mad Oak, a new bar from brothers Benjamin and Daniel Cukierman (Shattuck Down Low) that debuted on Saturday. Named for its location (it's on 12th Street between Madison and Oak Streets), the new bar boasts a sizable two-level patio area ideal for sunny East Bay days, with a big downstairs patio packed with picnic tables and a big rooftop garden featuring a living wall. Black Creek Builders is behind the revamp, which will also include space out back for food trucks to park and serve bargoers; inside, a rotating pop-up kitchen currently plays host to Javi's Cooking, serving Argentine empanadas and sandwiches (here's the menu).

On the drinks side of things, Mad Oak boasts an impressive 40 taps, with players both local (Almanac, Linden Street, Drake's) and national (Deschutes, Lost Abbey, Green Flash). Cocktails are mostly simple, with fresh-squeezed Greyhounds, Manhattans, and sours among the offerings. There are also a pair of 60" flat-screens for sports-viewing purposes. Hours are Monday-Friday, 3pm-2am, and Saturday-Sunday, 1pm-2am.
