The Wilma Theater is getting a $10 million facelift. Earlier this week the Broad Street theatre announced the "Transformation Fund" campaign to raise $10 million to upgrade their facade, convert the the theater's lobby into a public cafe, and establish an educational center. The facade has been redesigned by Kristin Robinson, who won a Barrymore Award for her set design in the theatre's 2014 production of Rapture, Blister, Burn. The cafe and education center, which will be called the HotHouse and serve as a sort of bootcamp for actors, was designed by board member Jim McGillin of McGillin Architecture.
In addition to the physical changes, the theater will be getting a new name: The Wilma at Aurora, named after Chara Aurora Cooper Haas, the mother of two board members.
The cafe is expected to have 64 inside and outside seats total, and feature a fireplace, upholstered chairs, and high-top tables, according to the Philly Voice. The theater is also seeking a liquor license. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2017.
