When we got word yesterday that this week's Proenza Schouler sample sale was not only extended through Friday, but also had new merchandise added, we stopped by first thing this morning to have a look. But first of all, some bad news: There are no additional markdowns just yet, and the accessories have all been seriously, seriously picked over.
What was previously the area that housed shelves of handbags is now basically empty. All that remained here were some white PS13 clutches ($299), tiny blue PS11s ($399), and a black purse with exotic patches ($840). The remaining wallets were primarily canvas, which feel overpriced at $129, plus a few all-leather small wallets ($79) left in orange and brown, and large wallets ($129) in brown, suede brown, suede blush, blue, and purple.
They also still have a huge selection of canvas pouches ($89), as well as some iPad cases ($99) and notebooks ($19), which we don't remember seeing during the preview. Also, a handful of bags remain on display in a glass case behind the downstairs registers, including those ubiquitous white totes ($399), one lonely orange PS1 ($449), and some of the exotics, which are among the sale's priciest items.
The shoe selection has also been decimated. What was once an entire corner of the sale is now down to two shelves and that "Lucky Size" one-off rack. Again, look out for misboxed items, because this problem only seemed to have gotten worse. As an example, we found size 41 espadrille slides in a size 37 sandal box, among many, many other mismatches. The largest selection is still in those basic white pumps, but there is also a large number of strappy flat sandals ($149, in black, blue, brown). Of the sizes available, 37s and 40+ seem to have the best availability.
Here's where we're beginning to see some new styles, including the aforementioned espadrille slides (in white, black, blue, black/snakeskin mix, $99) and pointed toe flats with an ankle strap ($149).
The clothing, both upstairs and down, feels very well-stocked. In particular, there is still lots and lots of denim — we saw two full racks of black denim jackets ($99), a variety of printed jeans (including black with white or blue speckles, $55), and some more standard denim styles ($29). The almost-untouched swimwear rack is also still pretty full, with all items going for $37 apiece. A cropped black leather jacket with a bell-shaped silhouette appears to have been restocked, and is quite well-priced at only $398.
Among the new styles, we particularly liked a mixed-media leather burgundy top ($518), a sumptuous long brocade coat ($1,425), and a mixed black-and-white leather jacket ($728). Otherwise, most of the ready-to-wear we remember having seen is more or less still available (though the $263 leather pants are running low).
Overall, we recommend stopping by only if additional markdowns are announced, and as long as you're primarily looking for clothing or if you happen to have a hankering for a large canvas pouch. Those looking for handbags and small leather goods are likely to be disappointed, especially since we were told that there's no restocking.
