The Derek Lam sample sale opened today at 11am (with just a short line), but we stopped by a bit earlier this morning to preview what's on offer at 151 Wooster Street. And while last year's sale was great for 10 Crosby, the designer's eponymous line (and its huge discounts, at least in some cases) was the main event this time around.
Derek Lam leather and suede apparel is right by the door as you enter. There's a good mix of jackets, dresses, and skirts in lots of bright colors, all for $395 — in some cases, that translates to almost 90% off a piece's original price, but most hover around 75% off. Sizes range from 36 to 44 (that's US 0—12), but 40 and 42 are the most common. Leather pants ($395) are going fast; for these, we spotted both skinny and jogger styles, as well as adventurous gray suede gauchos.
The selection of coats and jackets isn't great, but standouts include a pink mohair cape ($395) and a blue tweed style ($350). Single-button blazers are abundant, and there are plenty of them in black, tan, and navy in all sizes for $350. There are a few racks of pants ($150), skirts ($125), and shorts ($95) here as well, but the styles are mostly loud prints, tweed, or stripes that look fairly outdated.
The Derek Lam tops and dresses are the biggest draw of the sale. Silk blouses in very wearable colors and prints line the left-hand side of the space. Every dress is available in sizes 36 through 44, with 38 being the most common. Don't miss out on the rack of gowns, even if it's just to look: There are solid and printed pieces for $395, and we're still thinking about that white embellished silk gown that really stood out — check it out in the gallery above.
The knits and sweaters are worth checking out, too. We spotted solid shells, a patterned silk and cashmere sweater, and a chunky sleeveless fringed piece, all for $195 apiece.
Racks of 10 Crosby are in the middle of the floor, and were ransacked pretty quickly at the preview — it was difficult to sort through the dresses, tops, and sweaters among the crowds. We found a few runway samples, including badly damaged lambskin overalls ($250) and a gold sequined dress ($175). The one rack of outerwear was all over the place — think lightweight windbreakers ($195) mingling with full-length faux fur coats ($250). 10 Crosby was overall in worse condition than Derek Lam, and most pieces are missing size tags.
All seasons are represented on the shoe table in the back, with sandals, sneakers, heels, booties and tall boots from both 10 Crosby and Derek Lam. Shoes from 10 Crosby are going for $75 and boots are $100, while Derek Lam will set you back $100 for shoes and $150 for boots. Based on the sizes that were out, it looks like sizes 5, 10 and 11 are the most common. Sales staff said that there are more sizes in stock, but it depends on the shoe, since some are one-of-a-kind.
Finally, bags and accessories are in the left corner of the space. There are a few styles of belts ($50—65), and mostly 10 Crosby leather cross body bags ($150). Sunglasses and optical glasses are on the counter by the registers for $50. There are more optical styles than sunglasses, and all seem to lean towards the retro side.
Be warned that the dressing room is just a curtained space in the back, and the line to check out snaked halfway through the store when we were leaving. This sale runs through Sunday at 4pm; check out the Dealfeed below for more details.
