The NYC Fitness Studios and Gyms Opening in 2016: An Exhaustive List

New, 2 comments

As the end of 2015 approaches and 2016 sits on the horizon, we're taking a look back at the most notable shopping news of this year and looking forward to what's to come in the next — it's the Year in Racked.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

You thought 2015 had some good new gyms? Then you (and New York City) should be pumped for 2016. We've compiled a list of the 30 gyms we know are opening — or at least say that they're opening — next year, broken down by when they're expected to arrive. There are plenty set to debut in 2016's first few weeks, taking advantage of all those New Year's resolutions being made right now, and plenty more to follow; check them all out below.

Opening in January

((305)) Fitness: Look for the Miami-inspired dance party workout to land in Midtown South — specifically, at 33 East 33rd Street — right after the New Year; classes are already bookable for the week of January 4th.

SLT: The studio that teaches "Pilates on crack" is opening its first ground-floor studio on the Upper West Side at 580 Columbus Avenue (on the corner of 88th St) at some point in January. [Update: The studio informed us that public classes begin on January 16th.]

CityRow: Like SLT, Cityrow is also set to debut its first ground-floor studio, but this one's on the Upper East Side at 1409 Third Avenue (on the corner of 80th St) — loos like it's capitalizing on the popularity of rowing. This studio is already in preview mode and will celebrate its grand opening on Monday, January 4th.

Exhale: This one's actually a relocation within Soho — the small Spring Street studio will shutter to make way for an upgraded location at 59 Thompson Street, complete with skylights, locker rooms, and showers. An official opening date hasn't been announced, but signage is already up, so we wouldn't be surprised if this landed in January.

Wundabar: This'll be one of New York City's first new gyms of 2016 when it opens on January 2nd at Soho's 21 Thompson Street, bringing the LA-based Pilates workout to the East Coast for the first time.

Mile High Run Club: The treadmill-based workout is taking over its former competition's studio in Nomad at 24 West 25th Street. Like Wundabar, it's hoping to catch those making good on New Year's Resolutions with classes already available to book for January 2nd.

Physique 57: The barre workout is the latest (and certainly not the last) to arrive in the Financial District, setting up in a high-floor suite at 55 Broadway. You can book classes now for as early as January 6th.

ICE NYC: Tribeca's newest luxury fitness spot is coming to 93 Worth Street to offer an unorthodox mix of Crossfit, HIIT, and yoga classes. According to a co-owner, we can expect this to open to the public in the first half of the month.

Modo Yoga: The Canadian-based hot yoga practice is crossing the East River to open its second NYC studio in Williamsburg (109 Metropolitan Ave). Classes are now bookable for Friday, January 8th and beyond.

Opening in Early 2016

Pure Barre: Following up on a busy 2015 (the latest studio? West Village), the barre studio is staking a claim on the lower Upper East Side next; the owners of the 1237 Second Avenue location say it'll open in "early 2016."

Flywheel Sports: Be on the lookout for not one, but two new stadium-seating studios in the early part of next year. 51 Astor Place will be its biggest studio to date with more than 70 bikes, while the Midtown South location inside the Gansevoort Hotel at 420 Park Avenue South (but with its own entrance) will have 56.

The Dog Pound: The intense workout frequented by Hugh Jackman and his cadre of NYC dads is opening a public gym on the cusp of Tribeca at 511 Canal Street in the late winter or early spring, according to the owner.

Opening at Some Point in 2016

Tone House: The high-intensity gym has outgrown its Union Square roots and will relocate to 32 East 31st Street in Midtown South in the early part of next year.

Barry's Bootcamp: Like Flywheel, this ever-expanding fitness empire has at least two locations lined up for 2016 — 300 East 64th Street on the Upper East Side and Park Avenue South and 27th Street in Gramercy. We wouldn't be surprised if even more came along by the end of the year, too.

Shadowbox: The boutique boxing gym is pushing the workout of 2015 into 2016 with its second studio slated to open in Dumbo early next year, right by old school boxing gym Gleason's.

Tracy Anderson: Whether or not recent noise complaints played a factor in this decision, the fitness guru is moving her studio (and her loyal followers) "just down the block" from her current one on Tribeca's Greenwich Street; considering a lease was just signed, expect a decent chunk of 2016 to pass before it debuts.

David Barton Concept Gym: It was reported a while back that the fancy all-purpose fitness chain David Barton would open a "concept gym" in a former Bally's at 350 West 50th Street in Midtown West. We haven't heard much about it since then, but apartment listings for that address say it'll open in the first quarter of 2016. [Update: A representative for DavidBartonGym informed us that this gym is associated with David Barton the person, but not DavidBartonGym. Barton left his namesake fitness chain in 2013.]

Blink Fitness: Unsurprisingly, the budget chain gym has a host of new locations on its slate, including Avenue A in the East Village, Park Slope, near Grand Central, and more in the Bronx and the outer reaches of Brooklyn and Queens.

Equinox: Meanwhile, Blink's fancy older sister has three locations on the horizon for 2016 — its site says that the Dumbo location at 45 Washington Street will open in the summer, and dates weren't specified for neither East 92nd Street nor Midtown. The Lower East Side one that'll be next to Katz's isn't even listed, so that's likely 2017 or later (maybe around the same time as its healthy hotel?).

Planet Fitness: The budget gym chain will eventually replace a movie theater on the Upper West Side; but before that, it'll open at 215 West 34th Street.

Bonus: Beyond 2016

Soulcycle: The cult cycling studio signed a lease for 342 Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Heights, but last we heard, it's not opening until at least the early spring of 2017.
