Shoppers Are Going Nuts for Cheap Tops at the J. Crew Sample Sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

After a surprisingly short wait in the giant line to get into the J. Crew women's sample sale this morning, we were less surprised to find that shoppers really love cheap stuff (shocker!). Upon entering, practically everyone ran to the long rack of tops on the left, leaving behind the more expensive (but way nicer) Collection items.

It's not hard to see why: Basically everything in this section is around $25 (head over to our full sale report for photos), including eyelet blouses, structured tanks, chambray button-downs, and more classic J. Crew styles, like colorful basic tees ($15) and embellished tops ($40).

Another sale favorite: Dresses and shoes. Next to the tops, there's a row of regular J. Crew dresses, most of which are going for about $60, including work-ready shifts, and very J .Crew-esque wedding guest sundresses (you know the ones). Shoes, located in the very back, is also a particularly claustrophobic section, where shoppers were teetering while trying on a rainbow of heels ($100), pointed flats ($65), ankle boots ($100), and summery sandals ($65).

In short, if you're in the market for really nice (albeit really expensive—we're talking $90 at the very lowest end for tops) Collection items, there'll likely be tons of stock left throughout the week. But for a cheap and quick thrill, we recommend heading over after work tonight to see what's left. Stay tuned later this week for a full update.
