Barneys' New Chelsea Store Won't Look Anything Like the Old One

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We've been not-so-patiently waiting for Barneys to open the doors to the department store's newest branch in Chelsea. The address isn't new — it's the original home of the men's section — but don't expect store to pay homage or honor the legacy of the old store (or even Loehmann's, the last store at that location).

The Shophound noticed some extensive remodeling to the building's exterior: The old windows and entrance have been removed in favor of a set of glass doors, a stone wall, and a mostly glass front that the blogger speculates will offer a view directly into the store similar to Barneys' smaller, former Co-op stores in Brooklyn and on the Upper West Side.

We'll have a better idea of what's to come soon — the Chelsea flagship is still slated to open early next year, or at least that's the last that we heard.
