New York City's Newest Boxing Gym Is Already Planning Its Second Location

It looks like Shadowbox, Flatiron's newest workout destination for those who aren't afraid of a challenge, is running with the workout crowd's thirst for places to punch a bag. According to the New York Times, the no-contact gym (read: no one's getting hit in the face here) has already signed a lease for its next location. Though the address isn't specified, the paper reports that it's right near old-school full-contact boxing gym Gleason's in Dumbo.

However, the two gyms couldn't be more different. "Boxing gyms train people to be fighters," Shadowbox owner Daniel Glazer explained. "We just said: Why not turn that on its head? Because 99.9 percent of the population doesn't ever want to fight, but they would love to, if given the opportunity, hit something. Everyone wants to hit something."

Besides, Gleason's owner Bruce Silverfield isn't afraid of a little competition. "These gyms, as far as I'm concerned, are a good thing," he told the paper. "The more people that know about boxing, the more people that come into a boxing gym, the better off we are."

Plus, consider the price difference: a monthly pass here is $95, whereas a single 45-minute class at Shadowbox is currently $34.
