Powerhouse Books Is Moving Within Dumbo (and Not Closing)

Powerhouse Books will still be a powerhouse in Brooklyn — but come next year, it'll just be a bit of a smaller one. Dumbo NYC reports that the independent bookstore is giving up its home at 37 Main Street once its lease expires in February and shifting two blocks west to 32 Adams Street. And while the reason for the move is the expected rent hike, the unexpected twist is how real estate development firm Two Trees helped them secure a new home.

"We've been here since 2006 and during these 10 years we had hurricanes, we've had fires, we've had recessions," co-founder Daniel Power, who established his publishing house in 1995, told the neighborhood site. "And Two Trees worked with us through each of those tough periods."

"PowerHouse Books has contributed to the vibrancy of Dumboo and has provided a literary sanctuary in a city that has few left," Two Trees Principal Jed Walentas added. "It is a terrific neighborhood asset and it will be a fixture in the neighborhood for years to come."

The big problem, though, is that 32 Adams Street is not big at all. Compared to Powerhouse's current size, its new home will be less than a quarter of its size at 2,500 square feet. "I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the publishing company, which occupies the mezzanine [in the current space]," Power said. No word on whether they'll be able to establish another "arena" to hold the events they've become so well known for.
