You know how you always end up buying something from the bodega downstairs from your apartment, just because it's right there? Now imagine if that bodega were the Barneys flagship on Madison Avenue — your wallet would be in serious trouble. However, money probably isn't an issue for the future tenants of 660 Madison Avenue: The family who owns the building where the luxury department store is located has plans to add 54 apartments and hotel rooms above it, The Real Deal is reporting.

They'll be renovating the building's upper floors, levels 10 through 23, to satisfy the project. Right now, those floors are used as office condominiums. The space Barneys uses, specifically the basement through the 9th floor, will remain untouched.

These days, when we're talking about Barneys and construction projects in the same sentence, we're usually referring to the new Chelsea store that's slated to open early next year. The Shophound peeked into the new store at Seventh Avenue and West 17th Street to find that the shelving and fixtures have been installed on the main floor — a good sign that it's on track for the spring.

We'll be sure to update you further when we have a better idea idea of what's to come for both locations.
