The Ulla Johnson Sample Sale Is a Boho-Chic Dream

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We stopped by the Ulla Johnson sample sale at 168 Bowery when the doors opened at 10am this morning. There was neither a line when the sale opened nor when we left, but the crowd inside was getting crazier by the minute.

Apparel is hanging on racks along both sides of the space. There are tables with stacks of sweaters and knits in the center, and shoes are in the back right-hand corner. Be warned that as there aren't any fitting rooms, the shoe corner seems to be the makeshift dressing room. There was a good range of sizes in all the clothing, and the racks were being refreshed constantly so there's a good chance of finding your size.

We also found the pricing confusing because there doesn't seem to be a consistent system for marking it — we suggest asking the sales staff to confirm before heading to the register.

In terms of the stock, there are lots of cozy knits that'll be perfect for the imminent colder weather. We liked a black fringed open cardigan ($260), a chunky purple sweater, and a pink furry coat the most. For tops, there are tons of boho-chic, flowing, and embellished styles. There are plenty of this one white top with tassels ($95), as well as a black peasant blouse with sequins ($168). We also liked a silky burnt orange top with heavy fringe at the neck ($204) and a boxy printed silky blouse. A denim top with frayed hems ($84) stood out as well.

For bottoms, we spotted denim shorts ($70), white jeans from the Barney's collection ($100), and ruffled mini skirts in a few colorways. Patchwork boyfriend jeans were going for $204, and we saw multiple sizes. Dresses ranged from silky sun dresses to linen and cotton shift dresses with crocheted detail, and our favorite was a gray flower-printed shift dress ($264). We spotted a few olive green jumpsuits here as well.

There were just a few sizes of shoes, and most of them were in size 40. We didn't see prices on any of them, so be sure to ask. Suede styles with studs in black and burgundy are available as either pumps or sandals. Black moccasin-oxford hybrids stood out, as did a pair of studded leather ankle boots.

Shoes didn't appear to be drawing much attention from shoppers so there's a good chance that whatever you see in the gallery is still available for the taking. The sale runs through tomorrow; check out the Dealfeed below for more details.
