How Brooklyn Athletic Club Combines the Best of Traditional and Boutique Gyms

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It's been a while since we last heard about the Brooklyn Athletic Club, the huge fitness center on the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint that was scheduled to open last summer, but Well + Good reports that it finally debuted last month—and they say it's well worth the wait, to boot.

The four-story complex that's located next to the Berry Park bar goes beyond the offerings of traditional chain gyms—state-of-the-art cardio machines, weights areas, a yoga studio, personal training—with features like rooftop classes, child care, individual lap "pools" with water currents (see below), and private saunas stocked with S.W. Basics products.

"You need variety in training to to keep it interesting, and also to prevent over-training and imbalances," owner Larry Betz told the wellness site about the variety of activities he offers. "If you keep getting injured, maybe you should spend less time lifting weights and more time doing yoga, or if you can't go up stairs, maybe you should spend more time on the treadmill. People can come in and get everything they need in one space."

And the best part is that all of this is available at a fairly attainable price: Though BAC's website doesn't specify prices for its membership tiers, Well + Good says monthly charges begin at $85—a lot less than what you'd be paying for an Equinox membership (up to $225 for access a single location) or similar class packages at SLT ($375 for an unlimited month) or Soulcycle ($600 for 20 classes).
