Downtown Manhattan has its fair share of fancy gyms, but for Lower East Side residents, the nearest budget options are Blink Fitness in Noho or the Planet Fitness all the way in Tribeca. But according to Crain's, Essex Crossing, the nine-building megaproject that's transforming the area around the base of the Williamsburg Bridge will include a Planet Fitness of the neighborhood's very own.

Located on the entire second floor of 145 Clinton Street, the affordable gym will offer a viable alternative for residents. "Planet Fitness [offers] a $10 monthly membership fee that makes it accessible to everyone, which was very important to us," said one of the developers. "There are gyms that charge $250 a month for membership, but those don't fit the community's needs." Perhaps that was a direct dig at the Equinox slated to open just a few blocks north?

Planet Fitness is expected to arrive in 2017, along with a Regal Cinema and a grocery store on the ground level — don't get too excited just yet, but Trader Joe's is among the chains the developers are considering.

For residents who prefer the swanky gym life, though, there's about to be another option. The Real Deal reports that a new condo development at 100 Avenue A is expected to house a fancy fitness brand on its ground floor — we'll keep you posted as to which one [Update, 9/24: We just learned that Blink Fitness (so, not the fanciest of gyms) is headed to this address; expect the 12,000-square foot space to open in early 2016].
