A Pop-Up With Dress Shirts That Combat Subway Sweat

What do you get when you combine NASA technology and menswear? The laboratory-like Ministry of Supply pop-up shop, which opens today in Soho. The brand that started with a single piece of clothing—the Apollo dress shirt, which holds the record for the highest-funded fashion project on Kickstarter—is beginning its six-month run at 138 Wooster Street, but as co-founder Kit Hickey told Racked, they could be around for much longer.

Inside the gray-dominated space, shoppers will find a few varieties of dress shirts, tee-shirts, a sportswear shirt that's reminiscent of Under Armour, and a bomber jacket. Everything they make incorporates technology to solve common problems men come across in their clothes, like sweat stains (by using material found in space suits that help astronauts regulate their body temperature under extreme conditions), fraying (laser-cut buttonholes) and straight-up stink (there's reclaimed coffee—a winning odor neutralizer—in their socks). Plus, there's no need for trips to the dry cleaner: All of their shirts are machine-washable and don't require ironing.

On Wooster Street, shoppers can also find a selection of books, perfect for perusing while you grab a drink from the Toby's Estate Coffee-supplied beverage bar in the back. There's a small work station with tables and stools to hang out, plus a wall that'll feature a local "problem solver." The pop-up is slated to be open daily through January, but could take after their Boston and San Francisco and extend their run.
