Bergdorf Goodman Is Adding Two More Floors of Womenswear

Bergdorf Goodman is maximizing every inch it has in its non-landmarked home on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 58th Street. Executive offices and behind-the-scenes areas will be shifted to space above the adjacent Paris Theater so that the entire eighth and ninth floors can turn to retail, WWD reports. When completed in 2018, it'll add 25,000 square feet of selling space to the 150,000 the department store already has.

Company president Joshua Schulman called this "the biggest expansion to the women's store since 1967" and cited that it's part of the BG 20/20 renovations plans that were put in place more than two years ago and have since resulted in the sixth floor "Modernists" section, a revamped shoe area, updated shops-in-shop for high-end designers, and more. Renovations in the jewelry department are almost complete, and that section is set to reopen on December 13th.

Schulman remained coy on what these two new floors would contain, except that they would hold "the fastest-growing categories and key designers" and "some new attractions in addition to expanding the retail space." He also mentioned that this area could have some outward-facing features (fingers crossed for a balcony overlooking Central Park!)

"Generations of Bergdorf Goodman management thought about how it might be possible to expand the footprint of the women's store," he continued. "This is about our commitment to this location. It's the only one in the world. We have a very productive store. We want to keep investing in it to elevate the experience."

While this is certainly a major change to the iconic retailer, it's actually just a blip in what will be a major shakeup in New York City's department store scene in 2018. That's the year both Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus (the latter of which owns Bergdorf's) plan to open, as well as when Saks Fifth Avenue's unprecedented renovations are scheduled to finish.
