The Mackage Sample Sale Boasts an Incredible Selection of Heavy Winter Coats

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The Mackage sample sale just opened to the public this afternoon in the Garment District, so we stopped by the preview this morning at 260 West 39th Street to check it out. There was already a line forming by 10:45am, so expect a substantial wait time at any point today.

Bags are first up when you walk in, with all kinds of styles from cross bodies to hobos on shelves along the walls. A black pebbled leather backpack with a textured flap stood out ($195), as did an ultra-soft black leather bucket bag ($150).Women's gloves are in a box on a table in front of the shelves and are going for around $40. Men's gloves are in a box in front of that table, and they're also going for about $40.

Women's coats are in the middle and to the right-hand side of the space. We saw mostly sizes XS and S overall, but XXS—L are stocked in most styles. The lighter jackets are in the center of the room, with parkas against the wall. Lighter styles that stood out were the Neda bomber with leather sleeves for $375, the Dolores woven-look walker coat with leather trim for $350, and the Ava trench coat with leather sleeves for 70% off at $180.

The Shayli walker coat with a quilted leather vest attached is marked down to $575 (from $1,150), and the Isabel walker coat with a furry collar in white is going for $300. We also saw four different styles of leather jackets that are all well-stocked.

In the heavier options, the Kay, Avika, and Adali styles in multiple colorways each take up most of the racks. Kay is available in black, brown, gray, and navy for $480. The Avika in black is priced at $650 for the black colorway, and $450 for olive and khaki. For the Adali, black, blue and gray are going for $460, brown is $440, and red is $390. We also noted a few of a shiny style at $420 that's available in orange, red, blue, and camel colorways.

Men's coats are to the left of the space. The Harvey parka with a faux-fur lined hood has the most inventory — it's available in navy, gray, olive, and black, and is marked down to $380 (from $680). Size 42s were the most prevalent, but we saw sizes 36—46 throughout these racks. Besides the Harvey, we liked a black leather parka with a stand collar ($1,200), but there were only two of them on the racks. The Sloan parka with with toggle buttons is marked down to $550 (from $790), and the Etienne parka that also has toggle buttons is priced at $350 (from $890).

For the lighter jackets, the packable quilted Lawrence with zip-off sleeves is $235 (from $395) and is available in multiple colorways. The smart Alexander jacket with a ribbed collar is $350, and the Elvin hoodie with leather panels is almost 60% off at $170. The Clyde peacoat with textured leather sleeves is $425 (from $850, but a few bucks cheaper at the link posted here), and a leather jacket with a knit hood is $660.

There are two racks of kid's coats ranging in price from $120 to $245 outside the main sale area near the checkout, where you can also see a bit of backstock waiting to go out. Good thing, because when we left the sale with more than an hour before the public opening, there was a line of about 30 people and growing. Remember, you can also bring in a gently used coat to donate for a chance to win a bag that's worth $495.

The sale runs through Saturday at 4pm; check out the Dealfeed below for more details.
