Veda Now Makes Under-$500 Leather Jackets, Let's Not Question It

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

On this 80 degree summer day, local leather label Veda has blessed us with a slightly seasonally inappropriate but very welcome surprise—The Mercer Collection, a limited edition lineup of two $495 jackets and a $250 skirt. While the designs are similar to the brand's core offerings (The Mercer Collection's "Grand Leather Jacket" looks like a streamlined riff on Veda's "Lazer" moto, for example), the price points are more in line with what you'll find at one of the label's sample sales.

The collection is part of a push by Veda designer Lyndsey Butler to produce items in the brand's lower Manhattan factory that are exclusive to the website and flagship store. "The idea behind our new office was creating a space that allows us to follow the whole design process from beginning to end under one roof," she says. "We can now make limited edition styles that we want to test at retail in record time." Hopefully that means there are more surprise Veda capsule collections in our future.
