Pixie Market's Sample Sale, Where Nothing Is Over $40

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It's bar-none the cheapest (and cutest) sale in the city: Despite having transformed its LES store into concept shop Frankie, Pixie Market brought its sample sale back to a pop-up space in Nolita, and it's just as notoriously inexpensive as we remembered—everything's either $20, $30, or $40—and there's even a $10 bin in the back.

All those cute clothes, however? You've got to be on the teeny side yourself in order to fit into most of them. While there is a small rack of size larges in the very back of the store, the bulk of it is dedicated to extra-smalls and smalls. Shoes, however, are the opposite—we spied lots of size 8s, 9s, and 10s in platform Birkenstock-style sandals, stiletto booties, pointed-toe oxfords, and crazily-colored pumps, all for around $30 or $40.

As for the clothes, you'll notice a few repeats from previous sales, including twee mini-dresses, embellished sweatshirts, high-waisted denim skirts and shorts, overalls, embellished matching sets, and lots of Peter Pan collars. There's also a wall of handbags and clutches in unique styles, all $30, like the winky popcorn bag-shaped purse, a clutch that looks like an ace card, and furry bucket bags.

One thing to note: There aren't any fitting rooms, and there's just a single mirror up front—that, plus lunchtime crowds when we visited on Friday make the sale a teensy bit claustrophobic. Oh, and it's cash-only, so be sure to drop by your nearest no-fee ATM on your way in.
