Normally, IMAX is for 3D movies and popcorn, but now the big-screen, surround-sound company is looking to get into the business of fitness. According to DNAinfo, IMAX Fit LLC has applied for a permit to open a Soulcycle-inspired gym at 135 Plymouth Street in Dumbo, just a short walk from the site of Empire Stores.

It's probably exactly what you're picturing: rows of bikes placed in front of the screen (typically 72 feet by 53 feet), which will display scenes of nature to mimic the feeling of a cross-country cycling ride. The experience will also feature ambient sound in addition to the instructor's commentary. The article says that the general set-up in general would be the first of its kind in New York City; the Financial District's Flow Cycle mimics this in a smaller setting, with real courses projected onto a screen.

With the boutique fitness movement showing no signs of slowing, it makes sense that an outsider would try to capitalize on its popularity with a whole new twist. For now IMAX is waiting on permission from Dumbo's community board to move forward with its plans; voting is set to take place on December 9th.
