Muji's Fifth Avenue Flagship Has an Embroidering Station, Customized Scents

It's hard not to lose track of time at the new Muji flagship store, which opened today directly across from the New York Public Library at 475 Fifth Avenue. As the Japanese brand's largest store in the country at nearly 12,000 square feet, there's just so much to see and try, from embroidering your just-purchased apparel to shopping its selection of international finds.

The first thing you'll notice when you walk in is the Aroma Labo. iIt's an aroma station that only existed in Muji Tokyo until now, and customers can use it to create custom scents and diffusers from 48 different scented oils.

But that's not even the coolest part about the new flagship: Muji fanatics are going to go bananas over the embroidering station that's downstairs. This is where customers can choose from more than 100 different designs to have embroidered onto any of their new Muji products — slippers, cosmetic bags, sweaters, you name it). The best part? It only costs $3.

After you're done playing at the embroidery station (the book of designs includes everything from monograms to American flags to birthday cakes to lanterns), check out the massive children's apparel section, which is also exclusive in the United States to this US store. You'll find cozy pajamas and cute plaid dresses, plus two special edition tee-shirts that were designed with nods to the Museum of Natural History and Central Park, respectively.

Collaborations are also a big part of the new Muji flagship. They've partnered with Green Fingers, the Japanese plant shop on the Lower East Side that also recently worked with & Other Stories just up the street, to sell a variety of little plants. They also currently have partnerships with Café Grumpy and Crack Candy, and even more local food affiliations are on the way. Muji's own food line, which includes tea and snacks, is also available for purchase.

Another cool thing about this New York location is that it has the largest Muji For You section, where guests can use customize Muji gift boxes, notebooks, and shopping bags with an assortment of different stamps and stickers. The Found Muji section is also the largest in the US, and currently offers products that were inspired by the Basque region in France, like pottery and textiles.

Check it all out for yourself; the store is open from 10am to 9pm on Mondays through Saturdays and 11am to 8pm on Sundays.
