Tour Hunters Point South's Amenity-Packed Affordable Rentals

Related, Monadnock, and Phipps Houses' two affordable developments at Hunters Point South on the Long Island City waterfront are no longer just building shells promising lucky future tenants low rents, 27,000 square feet of bonkers amenities, and incredible views, as they were when we last visited in December; the towers, Hunters Point South Commons and Crossing, are now mostly complete, with move-ins beginning and amenity space buzzing, literally. On a not-so-sunny day last week, Related's Senior Vice President, Frank Monterisi, showed off the development's 2,300-square-foot urban farm and apiary (that's right, bees!), a variety of Commons' model units, and a plethora of additional amenity space shared between the two buildings.

The lottery for the Queens waterfront towers, which between the two have 925 studios to three-bedrooms, drew no less than 92,700 applications. To say that the city is hurting for quality affordable housing in rising neighborhoods is, for Monterisi, an understatement, which is part of the reason why he's so excited about the buildings. For Monterisi, a Queens native, the developments are about providing housing that will always be affordably-priced and creating community for people that are essential to the city; young families and professionals like teachers and fire fighters. The amenities, like the urban farm where GrowNYC will feature resident cooking classes and herb education workshops, bolster that vibe.
