See Inside the Mysterious Cottage Atop an East Village Building

New, 20 comments

In 2009, film scout Nick Carr asked, "Can you believe this exists in the East Village?" about a cottage perched on the roof of a First Avenue building. Then he discovered another, equally charming one on Third Avenue. The answer is no, no we cannot. The beach house-style cottages that are the penthouses of the prewar building at the corner of 13th Street and Third have intrigued passersby (including all readers of EV Grieve, which first spotted the listing) for years—and now, one of them is up for sale, which means we get a long-awaited look at the interiors and the outdoor space.

And, yes, the whole place is as quaint and adorable and perfect as we thought. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom duplex has tons of exposed brick, two wood-burning fireplaces (one's outside), and two private terraces. Of course, there are touches like "hand-painted Victorian-era aluminum casted balusters" to add to the dreamy vacation home vibe—it's right near Union Square but feels eons away. It's asking a rich (but probably justified) $4.44 million. UPDATE: And now, we're just waiting for this adorable country cottage with a porch that sits on top of a West Village building to come to market so we can see inside.
