See the Wall Street Bull, NYC Subway Made from Canned Food

The 23rd Annual Canstruction Competition opened yesterday at Brookfield Place in Battery Park City, as 30 New York City architecture and engineering firms—as well as a couple of high school ringers—unveiled their clever, and at times impressively precarious, structures made entirely out of cans of food. The exhibition, which sprawls throughout the public lobby and concourse areas of 230 Vesey Street, runs through November 16. After the competition closes, each of the hundred thousand or so cans will be donated to food rescue organization City Harvest, and from there delivered to some 500 soup kitchens and food pantries all across the city.

Uncannily, many of Canstruction's usual suspects were conjured into service again this year, including Pac-Man, a pair of rocket ships, a couple of bridges, dragons and sea monsters, and two separate Yoshis. Also in plentiful supply: awful, terrible puns in the sculpture's titles, such as "Harold and the Purple CANS", "Presidential CANdidates", and "To CANfinity... and Beyond!". Oh well.
