New York City's Best Stores to Shop on a Budget: Men's Edition

View as Map

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Earlier this year, we compiled the best places to shop on a budget in New York City. Highlights included small indie boutiques with under-$100 outfits, top-notch consignment sellers, and painstakingly well-curated stores to fulfill every possible niche. However, one crucial element was left out: Stores for the boys. Sorry, guys — we definitely had a focus on dresses for ourselves.

This time around, we scoured for the best of the best in wallet-friendly men's shopping and made a guide for the fashionable yet shallow-pocketed dudes of this city, bypassing reliable standards like Zara and Uniqlo to shed light on spots you might not know about. Whether it's new eyeglasses, beard tonic, or just a good outfit you're in need of, it's mapped out here.

Is one of your favorite stores not listed here? If you're willing to divulge your shopping secrets, let us know what it is in the comments section below.

Warby Parker glasses are popular to say the least — it would be an actual feat to avoid seeing a pair during your morning commute. However, the brand's ubiquity is not without reason: They sell high-quality frames and frequently introduce sleek new designs, all starting at $95.

Bonobos

Ill-fitting suit jackets and embarrassingly long or short hems are not a problem here. Bonobos is working on increasing men's access to high-quality and well-fitting suiting at off-the-rack prices. They have multiple brick-and-mortar Guideshops in New York where you can find practically-bespoke chinos for $88 and quilted jackets for $248 — we've got their original Chelsea headquarters listed here.
Okay, okay — Topman is a chain, and a rather large one at that. However, Topshop's men's line is something that cannot be missed. You'll find cutting-edge styles at really good prices. Not only are trendy pieces readily available, but plenty of classic pieces that you'll find yourself reaching for over and over again are always in the mix.

You know those stores that just know what's up? That's Alter, where buyers make sure you're getting the best quality and on-trend clothing out there. Shop Alter's minimalistic aesthetic and pick up some $65 shorts.
The Australian-based skincare line will handle grooming needs without destroying your wallet. Popping into a store is a complete experience, where store associates will speak with you (in great detail) about your skin type and preferences to help you find you the perfect product. An added bonus is the mean selection of beard tonic and shaving supplies.
