Don't sweat it if you're one of the many, many people without a $30,000 ticket to tonight's Met Gala, the over-the-top red carpet event celebrating the debut of the Costume Institute's spring exhibit Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. There's still fun to be had — and people to see — as celebrities, designers, models, and It Girls have flocked to the city to prepare for tonight's futuristic theme.

We've mapped out the best bets for spotting a familiar face or two before and after the event, from the decadent hotels where celebs get dressed to the clubs they'll be hitting for tonight's after parties.

If you want to get in right where the action is, this is obviously your place. Crowd around the barricades that are already set out to watch the Met roll out the red carpet for tonight's festivities and wait for the celebrities to arrive.

The Mark Hotel

Given its proximity to the museum, The Mark is a destination for celebrities getting ready for the gala — if you're able to hang out in the lobby, you may just get to see someone like Kendall Jenner, Lupita Nyong'o, or Jennifer Lopez waltz out of its silver elevators. And it's not just a pre-show destination: In 2015, Michael Kors hosted an after-party at the hotel bar.

The Carlyle

Last year, Rihanna prepped for the Met Gala at The Carlyle — one of the city's oldest hotels — with no doubt plenty of assistants to get her into that massive Guo Pei gown. Head here to catch glimpses of famous faces before they drive up to the museum a few blocks north.

The Surrey

Lady Gaga, Gigi Hadid, and Amanda Seyfried each slipped on their couture dresses inside one of The Surrey's suites last year. Have a seat in the lobby and drink in the space's artwork as your wait for your first (and second, and third) starlet spotting.

Okay, this one is a bit of a cheat spot because the celebrities that you'll see are on the big screen. The First Monday in May, a documentary that follows the creation of last year's exhibit China: Through the Looking Glass. You can see all of the showtimes here.

Cher and Marc Jacobs took over a suite here for their pre-Met Gala prep in 2015. Here's hoping you can spot a similar celebrity pairing this year heading out while you sip a pre-event drink at the bar.

Top of The Standard

Though it might be better known now for its Met Gala connection as the scene of That Infamous Elevator Fight the Top of the Standard has been and remains an unofficial after party spot for the gala's biggest names. Getting in will probably require heavy connections, so stick to the beer garden downstairs and keep your eyes peeled.

On just a regular day this place is especially buzzy, but tonight you can expect to find this club full of celebrities from Selena Gomez to Rihanna, the latter of whom hosted an after party of her own here in 2015.

The Bowery Hotel

Diane Kruger attended the 2015 Met Gala in an unexpected fashion twist: Chanel spring 2011. Another surprise? That she hung out all the way downtown at the Bowery Hotel before making her way up to the museum. Perhaps others will follow her lead this year.

Creative director Olivier Rousting and his Balmain Army will celebrate the brand's first store in the US tonight after the Met Gala, so a famous face or two popping up around the Wooster Street location wouldn't be too surprising.
